Week 4 Friday September 28 2007

Today we will be carrying on with learning about Corporations, Publicly Traded companies and the stock market.

Activity:
We will be starting a stock market game/competition that will run from today until January 10, 2008.  You will be given $100,000 (imaginary) to invest using an on-line stock market simulator.  This is VERY realistic, because it uses REAL stocks and stock prices.  The people who make the most money by January will win a PRIZE!!

Hand in your 'buying a business' worksheet.  

Activity:  You are to go on-line and find 3 franchises that you can buy into.  For each, answer the following questions

1. What is the franchise called? Briefly describe the business
2.  What is the initial franchise fee?
3. What will you need to start this franchise (make a list)
4.  Now you have a list of what you need to start the franchise, how much do you estimate the TOTAL Start-up cost to be?
5.  Do you have to pay any Royalty Fees, Advertising Fees or other Fees to the Franchise? Is so, how much and for what?
6. How much Capital (money on hand) will you need to start this franchise?

Print and Hand in when you are finished, out of 12 marks!

Activity 2:  You may work individually or in partners (not 3's or 4's) do do this activity.  You are to come up with a business idea and write it down.  

Next, you are to create a chart listing  the fixed and variable costs that will be involved in your business.  List as many as you can!! Remember taxes, employees, utilities, legal etc..

Activity 1: Think of five of your favourite companies. Then use the Internet to obtain the information that you need for the following task

Using Microsoft EXCEL create a chart of your five favourite companies. The chart must include the 'Company Name', 'Founders Name', 'Year Founded', 'list of Changes that have happened in the Company'.

Activity 2: When you finish activity one, work with a partner to come up with a list of 10-20 business opportunities that you feel exist. Pick the best one and write a few sentences explaining why you feel a business opportunity exists.

Read Lesson 1.1 (pgs. 4-8) in the textbook and complete True False and multiple choice questions.

Activity: You are to choose a famous entrepreneur. You are to then use the Internet to research your entrepreneur and answer the following questions in complete sentences.

1. What is your entrepreneurs name and what is the business/product that they are famous for.
2. Briefly explain some of their major successes.
3. Have they had any failures or troubles, if so, do you think that it hurt them or helped them in the end? Explain.
4. In a paragraph explain how this person has managed to achieve success, (you may wish to talk about their ideas, work ethic, ability to compete etc.)
5. Include a picture(s)
